Capps has now been to the finals of the last two races at Bristol.
He was runner-up season in the non-points Winston Showdown that pitted
Funny Cars against Top Fuel dragsters.
"All week back home in California we've been talking about the old
Bristol races," Capps said after defeating Hofmann with a 5.045-second,
288.52-mph run. "I was two years old when Snake won the last race here.
He's given me a great life, so I wish I could give him a thrill like
this every weekend."
Capps, whose last win was last October in Memphis, also had high praise
for crew chief Ed "The Ace" McCulloch, who tuned the Skoal Racing Green
Camaro to consistent elapsed times throughout the day.
"We had lane choice all day and a four-second time on each run until
the finals, so you can't ask for a better car than what we had Sunday.
You also have to give credit to assistant crew chiefs Todd Okuhara (Green
Camaro) and Tommy Delago (Blue Camaro)."
Capps, the No. 6 qualifier, opened competition with a close, 4.957
to 4.977 decision over Bob Gilbertson. He followed with wins over Tim
Wilkerson (4.941 to 9.503) and Bruce Sarver (4.984 to 13.116). (note

DENSHAM STAR OF FORCE TRIUMVERATE
One of the biggest stories to come out of the Bristol race was journeyman
Gary Densham's No. 1 qualifying run at the wheel of the third of John
Force's hybrid Ford Mustangs.
Densham scored in his 231st NHRA national event with a 4.870-second
run Friday night that remained the Bristol Dragway track record at the
conclusion of racing on Sunday. Densham previously had been No. 1 on
Friday only to see his effort eclipsed on Saturday. He had qualified
No. 2 four times.
Unfortunately, a burned piston on race day allowed 16th qualifier
Al Hofmann (photo) to get past him and then go all the way to the final.
John Force, posted the quickest time during eliminations (4.898 seconds)
when he beat arch rival Jerry Toliver in the first round. After stopping
Dean Skuza in round two, Force was victimized by a loss of traction
in the semifinals that propelled Al Hofmann into the final round. Force
still managed to retain his lead in the Winston Funny Car Championship.
OH, TO BE A FLY ON THE WALL…
Dick LaHaie and Lee Beard usually are not the most driver friendly
Crew Chiefs in the pits. So one can only speculate as to what was said
after their drivers, Larry Dixon and Whit Bazemore, respectively, were
guilty of foul starts during eliminations.
Bazemore had a .371 light against Al Hofmann in the Funny Car quarterfinals
even though he had lane choice and enjoyed a first round performance
advantage over the Mac Tools Pontiac.
