Mike Dunn raced Doug Herbert to mid track as Herbert went
up in smoke. Dunn takes a 4.700 and goes into the next round to race
the winner of the Larry Dixon and Tony Schumacher race.
Dixon leaves on the Army car with a .456 light and continues
on to defeat Schumacher running a 4.555 @ 315.78. The final pair of
this round brings the Bud King Bernstein and his "nemesis" Darrell Russell.
Amato's car leads from the start and continues on to stop the Bud Dragster
all the way through the lights running a 4.580 to KB's off the mark
4.588, Bernstein's slowest run of the meet, so far.
Round two brings together Darrell Russell and Doug Kalitta
in the MAC Tools dragster of Connie Kalitta. Both cars ran identical
elapsed times in the previous rounds. Doug leaves late with a 4.536
@ 322.04 and Russell smokes the tires at mid track. The other side of
the ladder brings a large E.T. advantage to the Miller Lite dragster
of Snake Racing in the previous round by over a tenth. Crew Chief Dick
LaHaie gives the nod to opposing Chief Ken Veney as the two cars stage.
Dixon has an advantage off the line with a .461 light running a 4.527
@ 323.74 to Dunn's 4.53 for Dunn at 319.07.
Dixon will race Doug Kalitta in the final, Dixon won this
race in 1995, his rookie year and was runner up in 1997. Doug Kalitta
won the Shootout in 1998 and was runner up the following year.
In the final, Dixon Jr with lane choice, once again leaves
on his competitor cutting another solid .468 light to Doug Kalitta's
.508. Dixon runs 4.514 @ 323.19 against a 4.557 @ 321.73 for Kalitta.
For the second time in his career Dixon rides the Budweiser Beer Wagon
drawn by the Clydesdales.
