CANNON GOES UP IN SMOKE
Scotty Cannon lost in the quarterfinal round at Sunday's
Pontiac Excitement Nationals. After qualifying seventh, Cannon came
out gunning in the first round with a victory over Del Worsham. Cannon,
in the Oakley Mad Science Funny Car, laid down an impressive 4.982-second
run at 304.25 mph. Worsham ran a 5.065 at 288.33.
In the quarterfinal round, Cannon suffered the same fate
as many of the leading Funny Car drivers. With track conditions becoming
slippery due to sunny skies and warm temperatures, tire smoke was the
rule and not the exception as the day wore on. The Oakley car was one
of the victims in the second round when traction problems cost Cannon
any chance of victory over Bruce Sarver.
After the second round was completed, the top six point
leaders, including Cannon, were eliminated from competition.
"The computer data showed that we had too much power,"
said Cannon. "Conditions changed and it became difficult to get down
track. The Oakley car is performing well and I think we'll still finish
strong in the point standings. This is only the 11th race with a new
team. You saw today how difficult and equal this category is. There
are no gimmes. One mistake, you're going to be putting the car in the
trailer." - David Ferroni
TEAM CASTROL IS SHUT OUT
In a bizarre series of events, all four Team Castrol drivers
were on the sidelines before the semifinal round of the 38th annual
Pontiac Excitement Nationals, 11th race in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series.
Rob Slavinski was the last to fall, falling to Larry Pritchett
in the quarterfinals of Comp Eliminator before losing control of his
Castrol AccuVision Pontiac on deceleration and crashing into the right-side
guardwall.
