FUEL COUPES

This year there were six fuel coupes among the 15 nitro burning cars present. The handbills labeled the Funny Car program Canada vs U.S. Unfortunately, it was a five on one deal with the Todd Paton being the sole Canadian car.

Low elapsed time and top speed of the meet went to the John Lawson wheeled car as he ran a motor killing 5.116/283.13 Saturday night.

Part time NHRA tourer Tim Wilkerson from nearby Springfield, Ill. had the second quickest time with a 5.202 which he recorded on Sunday. Based on Saturday night's ET's Paton and Lawson met in the final round with Paton getting the win, making him the first Canadian to win a professional fuel category in the 48 year history of this race.

THE VOICE

Bret Kepner is the voice of the World Series. In keeping with the spirit of the event Kepner announces the entire event from the starting line, keeping the crowd entertained and informed with his stunning command of arcane facts and figures pertaining to the World Series and the UDRA circuit. Kepner has been doing the event since 1936 making this event the 65th straight year he has attended the race. (Well, it seems that way.) It is interesting to note that Mr. Kepner worked the entire event without the benefit of notes, leading some observers to speculate that Mr. Kepner made it up as he went along. Kepner's press secretary denied that allegation categorically. Seriously though, a tip of the DRO cap to Bret for another great job! (photo by Jeff Burk)
