Saturday winners included Tom Head who drove his digger to a win in
the Midwest Super Comp series race with an 8.905 on a 8.90 dial, Tom
Lindle from Eldridge, Iowa who drove his '55 Chevy shoebox to the win
in Top Eliminator using a holeshot to beat Anthony Layne. Layne ran
a 8.327 on a 8.32 dial but his .582 reaction time wasn't good enough
to cover Lindle's 9.73 on a 9.69 dial because of Lindle's .503 light.
Super Modified was won by Chicago racer Joe Coglianese driving his
'48 Anglia over local racer Gary Klavon from Port Byron which is located
just about five miles from the track. Another Klavon, Dale, also from
Port Byron, brought home the gold with a win in Street, running a 12.293
on a 12.29 dial to get the win over Mark Griebel's breakout 17.158 on
a 17.19 dial.
RAIN, RAIN, RAIN
Rain was the most persistent enemy of this year's edition of the World
Series. It rained off and on all day Friday, ending just late enough
to wipe out the scheduled Pro Nitro and UDRA circuit cars' two laps.
At the insistence of the hundreds of sportsman racers on hand, Cordova
track workers and officials kept working on drying the track on into
the night. Long past midnight, racing on an eighth mile distance was
conducted, and IT continued until well past 3 AM. Kind of refreshing
to find a group of racers who just want to race!
Rain on Saturday night further altered the World Series schedule. After
one round of Pro Nitro and UDRA qualifying/exhibition action - and right
before round one of the featured match between veteran campaigners Shirley
Muldowney and Chris Karamesines, the skies opened up and forced a postponement
until Sunday.
This had the further effect of reducing the Shirley & Greek show to
a one-round affair. Various explanations were advanced by various parties
for the foreshortening, but to their credit, the Cordova fans took it
in good spirits. Fans tend to develop a sense of ownership at these
types of drag races and after 48 years, the fans certainly feel at home
at this terrific track run by Scott Gardner. We at DRO hope the Cordova
area fans will keep that feeling for many years to come.
