North Carolina racer Dale Brinsfield was involved in one of the soon
to be most talked about staging duels in IHRA history. Brinsfield, who
qualified in the number 15 spot with a 6.462, ran against #2 qualifier
Alan Pittman who recorded a 6.372! Pittman, who is a relative newcomer
to IHRA National Event competition and Scotty Cannon's partner in a
chassis shop, refused to stage against Brinsfield in the first round
of Pro Mod. The pair sat with the pre-stage lights on for over a minute
and twenty seconds. When the pair finally staged and left Pittman spun
the tires hard and crossed the center line, giving the win to Brinsfield.
Shirley
Muldowney returned to National Event competition for the first time since
her Central Michigan appearance last year. Shirley made the tough field
with an easy 5.15 lap, which was good for the fifth spot and a first round
matchup with top qualifier Jim Bailey. Shirley normally deep stages on
race day and did at this event, but a new brake system just installed
for this race caused her to turn on both stage lights and red light. Crew
chief Rahn Tobler said they would have it worked out by Rockingham.
