"THE GREEK" EDGING TOWARD NHRA 4s, 300-MPH
I admit some prejudices and one of them is my fandom for the 70-plus-year-old
drag racing legend, Chris Karamesines."The Greek" was bumped out of
the Gainesville show late Saturday, but still ran his best hot rod association
time when a 5.01 came up on the boards. The speed was a good enough
290.32-mph. I, who will be lucky to make it past 60 (as in age, not
mph) can only stare and wonder at the "Greek Mystique."
MILLICAN NETS NEW SPONSOR AND QUALIFYING SPOT

IHRA
Top Fuel standout Clay Millican and car owner Peter Lehman (right) took
on a new sponsor over the winter and unveiled it at Gainesville. Millican
wheeled his 2001 McKinney-chassied dragster to a career best 4.668 to
qualify in the eighth spot of the field. The three-time 2000 IHRA event-winner
draws Rhonda Hartman-Smith in round one.
FORCE TRAVELS 101 IN STYLE

For a record 101st time in his stellar career, John Force finished
on the Funny Car pole, this time with a 4.81. As quick as that is given
the 90-percent rule, he missed the track record by a significant amount.
Teammate Tony Pedregon holds the Gainesville mark with a sport's best
4.779.
