Groundhog Warmup Wins to Martin, Montecalvo and Freeman |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
For the uninitiated, Chicago-style competition dictates that all cars run a first round with the two low elapsed times coming back for a final round. Surviving those finales were Harold Martin (Pro Modified), John Montecalvo (Pro Stock), and Tim Freeman (Pro Stock Truck). The Southfield, Mich.-based Martin, a former General Motors engineer, trailed in the race only once and that was in the first round. His 6.347 trailed Mike Castellanas 6.329. E.T.s meant nothing in the final, however, as Castellana red-lighted and Martin shot to a 6.422, 212.66 to claim his first win ever at the track.
"It was a hard fought battle and Im excited about beginning the season with a win," said Martin. "We wanted to solidify a set-up for some of the cooler ambient temperatures and we were pleased to be able to do that." Montecalvos final was a little tougher than Martins. He had the first round competition down early leading that heat with a 6.633 with Dwayne Rices Pontiac Firebird the closest with a 6.682. The Center, Moriches, L.I. driver of the Citgo-backed Chevy Monte Carlo required his events best, a 6.616, 208.28 to fend off Rices strong 6.705, 207.90. Freemans Pro Stock title victory came at th expense of former NHRA Pro Stock Truck champ Larry Kopps S-10. Freemans mount clocked a 7.649, 175.78 to handle Kopps Chevy.
