THE TALK IN PRO STOCK
Big splash at Houston regarding next year's downsized Pro Stock cars:
Cavaliers for Chevrolet, Grand Ams for Pontiac and, reportedly, Neons
for Dodge. Is the Neon even going to be in production by the time the
2001 season begins?
FUEL INJECTION? ER, UMM…
With all the attention on body styles, little mention was made
of NHRA's decision to again table the fuel injection issue. Seems like
the High Sheriffs would learn not to make announcements until they've
made up their minds, wouldn't it?
PIT NOTES
As if Murf McKinney's new subframe chassis design wasn't attracting
enough interest because of the extra protection provided the driver,
Cory McClenathan proved at Houston that it ain't too bad a race car,
either.
McClenathan ended a season-long victory drought (interrupted only by
an upset win in the Winston Showdown bonus race) at Houston Raceway
Park where he literally crushed the competition. After qualifying second
at 4.540, Cory Mac ran 4.587, 4.548 (quickest in eliminations), 4.591
and 4.564, beating upstart Bobby Baldwin, whose car had to be shut off
at the line in the final.
Baldwin, a first time finalist, only made the call for the final because
of the help of Gary Densham and crew, who provided his team with a short
block and enough other parts and pieces to at least roll to the line.
The team's downfall was a fuel line apparently burned in a semifinal
engine fire that went undetected. When the car was fired, fuel began
to pour out of the line.
AND THE YANKEES WIN THE PENNENT!
The
much ballyhooed debut of the New York Yankees Top Fuel dragster owned
by Darrell Gwynn and Hank Steinbrenner was everything it was supposed
to be. Mike Dunn came off the trailer with a best-of-the-season 4.530
that earned him the Budweiser bonus as the No. 1 qualifier. Unfortunately,
the car lost traction in round one.
