Earwood went on to stress the fact that any could win and that the races don’t always go to the newest, slickest and quickest cars at the million-dollar shows.

“We run eighth-mile at these events because the majority of tracks in the south are eighth-mile,” he said. “Our fastest cars, usually dragsters, run about 4.70’s, but we’ve had big winners in cars that are considerably slower.

“In the first year, we ran at Huntsville we had a good local racer named Toby Barnes that ran a streetable ‘68 Camaro on a very tight budget. The young man left the track with $50,000.

“The biggest winner we’ve had was George Tamasi, Sr., who won $235,000 in 1998 at the Huntsville B&M Million race. How big a purse is that? Well, NHRA Funny Car John Force won $210,000 at last year’s Winston Showdown in Bristol, Tenn.

“This race is shaping up to be our best yet. Based on pre-entries, it looks like we’ll go over 300 cars and, of course, that bumps the purse up that much more.”
