RIEGER TO SHIFT TO LEVERS?

Defending P/S champ Bob Rieger tested his '57 shoebox in Florida starting on Wednesday before the race. Rieger reportedly had a new power plant-a dual turbocharged big block- and a new five speed liberty trans, but was unable to get down track the most of the week. Reports were that the car had traction problems related to trying a five speed manual trans instead of his tried and true Lenco. Rieger did qualify 5th with a 6.987/198 pass, but traction problems in the first round resulted in an 8.988/86mph pass and an early departure for the coast. Riwger is rumored to have the car at Jerry Bickel's Missouri shop getting it set up to accept a Lenco trans before the Rockingham race.

ADLER TO BRING BACK GTO?
Randy Adler, who made his mark in the O/S class driving his gorgeous early sixties blown GTO, told DRO that he was giving up on the '63 split window 'Vette the team has been trying to make work for two seasons. The team will return to action at the Rockingham race with the flamed GTO!

SUPER STREET/HOT STREET
Despite a new year and some new cars in the Super Street and Hot Street classes, many of the same names appeared in the winners circle and at the top of the qualifying lists at the first race.

Despite the loss of Billy Glidden and his 'Stang a couple of years ago, Super Street continues to be dominated by Mustang racers. At the opening event veteran Mustang racer Mike Scranton took the win over perennial Super Street star and Chevy racer Nick Scavo. Hot Street saw Mopar maven Tim Davis over Tony Buchoff.

SCRANTON SWEEPS SUPER STREET
Mike Scranton's supercharged 'Stang was the clear leader at this first NMCA race of the season. Scranton, from nearby Tampa, FL, set low elapsed time and top speed in qualifying with a 7.581/186.18 pass. He then waded through a tough field to face number two qualifier Nick Scavo's supercharged, rat motored '69 Camaro. It was Ford all the way as Scranton's pony ran a 7.631/185.07 to Scavo's 7.826/181.59.

MOROSO RUNS C-5 IN HOT STREET
Rick Moroso debuted his long awaited C-5 at the NMCA Moroso event. He was able to run a couple of rounds and made some laps in the 8.80 range, which were his quickest ever. Moroso's 'Vette is still about 100 lbs. too heavy and may show at the next race with an aluminum engine to shed the overweight.

GELTING GETS QUICKER
Jamie Gelting ,who has been running an automatic trans in his small block-powered Calais for the last couple of seasons, joined the five-speed manual trans crowd this year, and the initial results were impressive. Gelting qualified number one with a stellar 8.795 and looked like he would dominate. A late, late light in the early rounds sent him back to Wisconsin.

REAL STREET /EZ STREET
Daniel Paolini dominated the Real Street class. His small block '94 Camaro set low elapsed time and top speed at 9.065/151.34 and then used that power to overcome a massive holeshot by Dave LaGory driving his 'Cuda in the finals for the victory.

ROHE ROWS THROUGH FIELD
Perennial World Champ Gary Rohe who was supposed to debut his new Rick Jones-built Mustang at the race showed up with his old car while waiting for his new one to be finished. Scott Budisalitch's Mustang set low elapsed time at 8.468/159.74 and faced Rohe in the finals. Budisalitch wasted a fine 8.525/159.15 in losing to Rohe's 8.601/158.20.
