| During first-round eliminations for
the Alcohol Funny Cars, Jay Payne got out of shape and almost brushed
the wall while racing Jeff McCulloch (note the rear tire off the
ground). Payne still won the round, then went on to defeat Doug
Gordon and Frank Manzo before meeting Bob Newberry in the final.
Newberry left first, but Payne had more power and drove to a 5.704
at 253.47, compared to Newberry's 5.739 at 250.04 mph. (photo by
