CAPPS SETS MILE-HIGH E.T. MARK
Ron Capps and the Skoal Racing Green Camaro Funny Car reeled off four straight four-second runs in the rarified Rocky Mountain air. Two came during Saturday qualifying and the other pair during Sunday's eliminations.

Had all four times come on Sunday, Capps would have been an easy race winner. But the string that included a track record 4.949 seconds ended in a semifinal loss when the tires lost traction against John Force.

Capps was the only one to run in the four-second range on both his Saturday qualifying runs. What's even more surprising is there had been just one four-second run (4.990 in 2000) at this altitude track prior to this year. His qualifying best, 4.970, came on his final pass and could've been better because the blower belt broke about 300 feet before the finish line. - Joe Sherk

DIXON'S WIN PUTS HIM BREATHING DOWN BERNSTEIN'S NECK

Larry Dixon's Top Fuel win moved him a mere three points behind Winston points leader Kenny Bernstein, who lost in the second round to Doug Herbert. But the points didn't seem to matter as Dixon took his third win of the season.

"The points don't matter until that final Sunday of the season," Dixon said. "I don't care about the points right now, I am just trying to win races. I've gone into the U.S. Nationals in Indy several times just a few rounds out of first place and it didn't buy us jack. I just look at the next race and try and do well and go from there. If we do better than everybody else, we'll get the points."

Dixon drove the Miller Lite dragster to a 4.844/298.47 against Doug Kalitta in the final, as Kalitta lost traction and slowed to a 5.364 at 257.24
