With Sweeny out of the field, number two qualifier John
Schroeder put together five straight sub eight-second passes and cruised
into the winners circle, defeating number 13 qualifier Sean Carpenter
with a 7.934/176.53 lap when Carpenter's Nova could only manage an 8.695/146
effort.
There were only three cars qualified with seven-second
passes, but in eliminations Ken Anderson, who qualified with an eight-second
pass, stepped up to the seven-second level with a 7.98 losing effort
to number three qualifier "Charlie Boy" Micallef's 7.92.
RADIAL TIRE CLASS

Tire competitor. (Adam Cranmer photo) |
This class had the most entries of all with 67 and was perhaps the class
closest to actually having real street cars in it. DOT radials and stock
suspension are required, but no wheelie bars are allowed. The base weight
is 3,400 lbs. Only one 600+ cubic inch engine and three 500 cubic inch
engines were used in competition. Number one qualifier and touring street
legal racer Troy Pirez ran an 8.780/159 using a 511-inch big block for
power. Like the Heavy class, the Radial Tire class qualifying spread
was about a second with the number 32 qualifier Gusiavo Solis recording
a 9.826 to make the 32-car field.
The first three qualifiers, Pirez, Peter Champani and
Chris Little, along with number five man Dwayne Gutridge cruised into
the semi-finals. Gutridge and his Mustang were the betting favorite
to win after he ran a stellar 8.679/161 to drop number one qualifier
Pirez in the semis. His ET was about a tenth and a half better than
the low qualifiers and was good for low elapsed of the meet but Gutridge
couldn't carry that performance to the final round.

In the final he must have broke the car as he coasted
to a 37-second elapsed time while Chris Little and his Mustang ran a
very good 8.72/161 to pick up the win.
