George Meaney tuned the fuel injected turbo big block, but Mike Moran's quad turbo didn't qualify.

One racer who figured to advance to the round of 16 and didn't was former NHRA Pro Stock star Joe LePone Jr who was driving a mountain-motored, no power adder Ford. Unfortunately, he met up with former Orlando event winner Tony Christian in the first round and lost.

The marquee match-up of the event came in the second round and featured the ex-Bob Rieger, turbo-charged S-10 with Brian Weaver between the pipes versus Todd Shepherd's one-of-a kind, blown '62 Plymouth Hemi wagon. Weaver had qualified second with a stout 6.718 while Shepherd's wagon made the number 16 spot with a 6.935. Shepherd made the pass of his life, booting the supercharged Hemi wagon to an otherworldly 6.704/216.24 to drop Weaver's 6.780/207.03. Weaver strapped a .018 holeshot on Shepherd but Shepherd got to the stripe 50 thousandths of a second before Weaver. Shepherd's winning lap gave him and his huge wagon the second quickest lap of the event and top speed of the meet.
