"SANDMAN" WINS PRO STREET

Fresh off a Super Chevy Show in Dallas, TX, where he suffered about $4,000 damage to his blown '69 Camaro when the driveshaft broke loose, Tony "Sandman" Williams was especially happy with the $5,000 check he received for beating Brian Gould in the Outlaw Pro Street final.

"This really helps a lot, but I'm going to share it with my crew because they worked really hard all week to get us here," Williams said. "I also want to thank Hank Hill for all the help he gave us this weekend. He's the reason we won."

Well, not completely. Williams' .474 reaction time allowed his 4.543/166.51 combo to overcome the quicker 4.407 at 160.59-mph pass by Gould after he posted a .534-second reaction.

Tony Williams qualified his beautiful, black 1969 Camaro third in Outlaw Pro Street with a 4.514-sec pass at 154.53 mph. Milt Decker's bright yellow 1963 Corvette was quickest with a 4.378/163.04 combination, followed by Ronnie Gardner's 4.473/161.87 in his 1963 'Vette.

Williams put Randy Oliver's 2000 Monte Carlo back on the trailer after the first round, then sent Steve Hall packing in round two. The burst plate on the supercharger of number-one qualifier Milt Decker's Corvette broke during his semi-final burnout, giving Williams a bye run to the final. Meanwhile, Gould also beat Oliver in the first round, as Oliver also was campaigning a 1992 Camaro in the class. Gould then disposed of Jeff Davis (below) in the quarter-finals before he too enjoyed a bye to the final.

Jeff Davis, a regular at Darlington's Wednesday night shows, put his 1982 Oldsmobile into the Outlaw Pro Street show with a ninth-place 5.118 pass at 130.60 mph.

TOP QUALIFIERS FACE OFF

Tyson Motorsports teammates Scott Winfield and Jeff Tyson qualified their supercharged late-'80s Mustangs number-one and number-two, respectively, then advanced through eliminations to meet in the Outlaw Pure Street final.

Winfield left first with a .484 light, then went 5.290 at 138.76 compared to the 5.311 at 136.71 posted by Tyson. The win was worth $5,000 to the Kinston, NC-based driver.
