3-CAR TEAM TROUBLES?
The bloom may be off the Gary Densham / John Force third car setup.
Word out of the Castrol camp has it the third car is not paying the
dividends they were looking for. Plans for now are to continue with
all three cars in play. Stay tuned. --JL
...NOT THAT TONY WOULD NOTICE
Tony Pedregon joined teammate John Force as a three-time winner this
season by driving his Castrol SYNTEC Ford Mustang past the Camaro of
Tommy Johnson Jr. in the final round.
Pedregon, the No. 3 qualifier, never approached
his 4.863-second qualifying time, but left the starting line first in
all four rounds and used a .468 to .531 reaction time advantage in the
final to make a 5.006-second quarter mile good enough for his 13th career
victory. - Dave Densmore
NOTHING FUN IN FUNNY CAR
Funny Car continues to be a tough cut to make, with event record bump
spots and new track records going down at each stop on the NHRA tour.
It took a 4.978 to make the St. Louis show, with Chuck Etchells' 4.978
and Ron Capps 4.979 coming up short. Bump spot guy Jerry Tolliver edged
Etchells out by posting a better MPH reading. -JL
QUALIFYING STREAKS BY THE
NUMBERS
Funny Car driver Ron Capps missed the show for the first time in 35
races. Capps ended the second longest qualifying streak, moving Bruce
Sarver to the second place with 27 consecutive starts. John Force holds
the current Funny Car qualifying streak with 265 starts. Pro Stock driver
Warren Johnson has the current longest qualifying streak in the NHRA
with 276 consecutive starts.
'CRAFTY' CREASY
Dale Creasy Jr. showed up with a new graphics package
spotlighting the colors of event sponsor Sears and their Craftsman line
of tools and equipment. Pit side estimates of how many sheckels changed
hands varied widely, but any backing that comes the Creasy's way is
hard earned, indeed. The hard core boys from Illinois deserve a break
from the corporate gods, to say the least. --JL
