Dixon took a tenth-second edge with him to the line in the final round, but it would not be enough. Russell drilled him on the tree (.468 to .4.90) and outran the points leader to boot, 4.63/314.90 to 4.67/316.38. So now there is another player on the Top Fuel scene. It is still early in the season, and most of today's Top Fuel shoes run a bit to the streaky side. Anyone can get on a roll, and right now the potential streaker is Russell. And with crew chief Wayne Dupuy calling the shots, Russell could be in contention the rest of the way.

FUNNY CAR

You can't really appreciate just what the funny car field is up against, in terms of beating John Force for the championship, until you see it all up close a few times. Force is not having, by anyone's standards, an overpowering year so far. Yet he leads the points. In fact, every time someone makes a move to assert themselves, they just as quickly take a step or two backwards. It was much the same at Topeka.

At the end of qualifying, Team Force held the following spots - Tony P at #3 (4.88), Da Boss at #7 (4.91) and Gary D at #8 (4.92). Bruce Sarver stood atop the heap at 4.86, with Johnny Gray close with a 4.68. Dean Skuza stood a disappointing 12 at 4.88 and early season hotty Del Worsham possessed the bump at 5.09. Five felt the sting of the DNQ bug: Todd Paton, Tommy Johnson Jr. (above), Terry Haddock, Bob Gilbertson and Jack Wyatt.

Sarver (above) started elims by being welded to the tree by Worsham, his slightly better 4.91 losing to Del's 4.93. Team Force took care of biz, with Densham stopping Cruz Pedregon, Tony P beating dale Creasy Jr, and Da Boss laying one on Whit Bazemore. It's an up-and-down world when taking on Force, and unfortunately for him, no one knows it better than Bazemore. Other first round highlights included Dean Skuza's upset of Ron Capps, and Tim Wilkerson's win over John Lawson.

Team Force got down to it in the second stanza. All three TF entries advanced, with Densham ending Worsham's day, Da Boss stopping Johnny Gray, and Tony P edging Frankie P on a holeshot. Non-Force Family member Tim Wilkerson beat Skuza to complete the semifinal card.
