Sayonara TNN
Television viewers of the Topeka show were undoubtedly moved a tad when
announcers Eli Gold, Frank Hawley, and Steve Evans bid adieu to that network's
coverage of NHRA drag racing. Evans said that, in his case, after 700
races (18 years), the chutes have been pulled at TNN. NHRA race coverage
will now be seen on ESPN. All three of these guys belong in drag racing
coverage, somehow, someway.
How About Them Ramblers?
Would you believe that both Super Stock and Stock went to AMC products?
Scott Pearson's Super Stock AMX defeated past Federal-Mogul champ Dan
Fletcher to notch his second NHRA event win of 2000 (he won Brainerd)
and first-time winner Bub Miller's Spirit bopped James Paul's Plymouth
to grab Stock. It's been a long time since two Ramblers have carted
off "Wallys" at an NHRA national event.
Taken Aback? Cory Mac?
According to a very reliable source, the MBNA/Cory McClenathan Top Fuel
deal is over at the end of the year. This same source found out that
MBNA wanted to back a NASCAR car and went to team owner Joe Gibbs. Gibbs
was flattered that they asked, but he told the potential sponsors that
given the fact that team driver Bobby LaBonte was No. 1 in NASCAR points
and Tony Stewart was right up there in the top five, that MBNA could
not be accommodated. Gibbs offered them an associate sponsorship, but
from what we hear, MBNA was not satisfied with that. Ohhhh, drag racing
... whatever are we gonna do?
AHRA Beats NHRA
A
couple of legendary Midwest doorslammer racers met in the final of Super
Gas-Bryan Folk versus Bill Mitchell. In the days of AHRA, Mitchell was
a certifiable hitter in Stock Eliminator and was even a World Champion.
Folk, of course, is a member of the legendary Folk family of racers
who got their start in big-time bracket racing at Byron (Ill.) Dragway's
Bracket Nationals.
In the final, Mitchell was inexplicably late and could only manage
a .406 to Folk's blistering .405. Mitchell ran a pedestrian 9.909 but
won anyway when Folk broke out with a ridiculous 9.891. Kind of makes
you wonder how either one of these guys ever won a race, doesn't it?
BLOWER OVERDRIVE
IHRA
Top Fuel points contender Paul Romine and tuner Clayton Harris made
the show at Topeka in the number 14 spot with a 4.816/299.36. The only
reason that effort is worth a note is that they did it with 25% overdrive
on the supercharger, when most of the other Top Fuel teams were at 40%
or higher. The team was getting ready for the upcoming IHRA events where
they are restricted to just 25% overdrive by the rules.
"It's a two race deal there for the championship and we used this race
to get a better tune-up," said Romine.
