Ben Ledford, from Marietta,
GA, launched hard with the only '41 Willys on
the grounds, but failed to qualify after going
4.713 secs at 124.28 mph.
Team owner James Duncan
says he and driver Doug Patton race "the only
Pro Mod with a hemi on nitrous in the country,
that we know of." Duncan, who has been running
the combination for six years, says he just
wants something a little different, but admits
the 675 c.i. engine in his '92 Stealth "hates
nitrous as much as it'd like a blower. It's
tricky."
Rex Kelley and sons were using the Phenix City
race as a test session for their new Sonny Leonard-built
737 c.i. motor. The Hueytown, AL-based team
also was experimenting with Top Fuel tires for
the first time and had a little trouble finding
the right clutch set-up during qualifying. They
failed to make the cut, but in a test pass later
in the day, Kelley went 4.48 seconds, which
would have been just good enough to break into
the eight-car field.

And now for something
completely different. How about a 1988 Olds
Firenza with a 632 up front? Alan Moody, current
administrator for the Dixie Pro Stocks, qualified
his Temple, GA-based ride eighth with a 4.501-secs
pass at 160.76 mph. Moody said the total purse
at the event was $7,000 with $1,550 going to
the winner.
