Summaries to follow:
Talmadge Wood brought
a new IHRA Mountain Motor Pro Stock car to learn
to drive and get his license. Wood said this
was a dream come true and made many 60-ft and
330-ft passes to familiarize himself with the
new ride. He wore out the team and the car virtually
"hot lapping," making progress each
and every pass.
Chris Gould was on hand with his new "Fire Power" jet-powered Funny Car to get his license. After several launches he finally made his first full blast running a 5.92/265 mph blast. The chute was late to deploy and thanks to the long shutdown area afforded by Rockingham Dragway, he was safe and the car was okay for another blast. Gould would come back to make several more runs Sunday, carding a 6.08 at 256 mph.
Also on hand Sunday was the Coors light jet Funny Car team who made a single pass of 5.83 at 258 mph.
Rounding
out the "jet powered contingent" was
none other then Kevin Martin and his totally
INSANE jet powered motorcycle. He also was completing
his license runs this weekend and ran a best
of 9.34/163. Look for a feature soon on this
beast.
Tom Carter was another driver looking to get
his license to drive his incredible all white
'63 blown alcohol Corvette Pro Modified. The
combination of a new car, new driver and crew
seemed to be too much and he was at odds with
the track both Saturday and Sunday, shaking
the tires shortly before 60 feet.
Paul Athey, also representing
the Pro Modified contingent, tried his hand
at the track but the Quain Stott-tuned Mohegan
Sun '63 Corvette didn't want to leave the starting
line and Paul quickly became re-acquainted with
tire shake. Over the winter the nitrous plant
was swapped out for a blown alcohol Hemi. The
chassis was also updated and the team was trying
to figure out what the new combination needed
to firmly plant the power. Progress was made
on Sunday as the car finally launched and got
out 60 feet without shaking the tires.
