FORCE, AMATO SET NEW ET RECORDS
…SORT OF!
John Force’s 4.826 and Joe Amato’s 4.563 set new standards for the nitro burners since they have been running under the 90% nitro rule. Unfortunately for the fans, they are still both considerably slower than the 4.70's and 4.40’s that those cars were running at the end of the 1999 season.

KINGS OF SPEED LIMITED AT RICHMOND
The 90% nitro rule continued to have a real effect on speed as the top speed for the Top Fuel cars at Richmond was Schumacher’s 318.62. Force’s 317.72, which he ran during qualifying, was top speed of the meet until Schumacher ran the 318 in the semi-finals. Bet that the dragster guys aren’t laughing about this. EXPENSIVE LAP FOR CORY MAC Cory McClenathan was cruising along nicely on Sunday until the second round. He raced Gary Scelzi and lost. Not only did he get outrun, but he oiled the track, which means he also lost 10 championship points and $1000. Seems a bit unfair to DRO.

THE BUMP IN TOP FUEL IS 8.79!!
Only 15 Top Fuel cars showed at the Houston race. Fortunately, there were 16 of the sport’s quickest and fastest cars at Dinwiddie (Richmond). However, the final two qualifiers had qualifying times of 8.76 at 82mph and 8.76 at 89mph!!! Maybe those two racers just ran a soft tune-up so that they wouldn’t blow an engine, oil the track and have to pay NHRA $500-or maybe not.

FROM THE PENTHOUSE TO THE OUTHOUSE IN 6.91 SECONDS.
Warren Johnson qualified on the pole at Richmond with a just off the national record 6.838 lap and also had top speed with a 201.28. Rickie Smith squeaked into the field in the number 16 spot in Ken Koretsky’s Camaro with a 6.905 / 199.02. Rickie and Warren met in the first round and “Tricky” put a .483 light on top of Warren’s .524 and then ran a 6.890 to Warren’s 6.912 and the champ took the count in the first round.

IHRA vs NHRA AT RICHMOND:
NHRA WINS SPORTSMAN WAR

A showdown between a pair of true all star sportsman racers went down at a the Richmond race. Multiple-time NHRA World Champ Jeff Taylor (right) squared off in the final of Super Stock against multiple-time IHRA World Champ Anthony Bertozzi. It was a monster race. NHRA vet Taylor left on Bertozzi with a .512 light to Bertozzzi’s .517. Taylor ran a 9.890(!) on a 9.89 dial to bury Bertozzi who broke out with a 9.283 on a 9.29. No Lift, No Prisoners!

Great Sportsman racing. A tip of the DRO cap to Dave Kommel for the tip.

MANZO PUNISHES AUSSIE TO WIN FM/FC TITLE
Frank Manzo didn’t qualify on the pole for this race. That honor went to Brisbane, Australia’s Steve Harker with a 5.661 / 253.09 lap. But on raceday, Frank “The Punisher” Manzo (right) showed why he will probably defend his World title. He ran a 5.57 in the first round, took out Bob Newberry in the semi-finals and then laid away low qualifier Harker in the final with an impressive 5.61 / 256.26
