IT'S A GOOD THING WE'RE NOT BANKING ON THIS
Just a minor detail, but I think you might want to check your exchange rate for Australian dollars into US. My figures show an Australian dollar is currently worth about 52 cents US and not $1.66.

Rick Pike

You're absolutely correct. We got our conversion going the wrong way. One Australian dollar equals $1.66 US.

SOUNDS LIKE AN AUSTRALIAN VACATION IS IN OUR FUTURE
Hey, you guys, don't be put off by the figure quoted for the Aussie dollar being worth $1.66 US, it's the other way round… So don't shelve your plans to visit down under, come on down and have a 44% discount holiday (vacation then!)

Make your plans to come down in June and while here catch our Winternationals in the beautiful sub-tropical city of Brisbane where the winter temperatures are about 50 degrees F at night to 70-75 degree F in the day. The Willowbank track is on par with all but the top North American tracks. Visit the golden beaches at Surfers Paradise and maybe chat with one of the many bikini wearing "meter maids." Oh, and bring your board shorts.

Just stumbled on your emag and love it so far. Goodonya!

SPEC-DRAGSTER MODIFICATIONS
I agree with (Jok's) idea on the most part, but think a couple of areas need to be addressed.

Transmissions: Include them in the claim or limit them to stock manufacture. A person can easily spend $900 just on a powerglide case, and that would give a person the ability to control the strength of the hit on launch,, a definite advantage to those with cash. The same goes with the converter. Throw it in with the claim idea. $2,000 for engine, trans, and converter might keep people honest.

On the rpm shifter, I think that is not needed. Actually, make it not allowed. Let's keep it really basic.

Overall, great idea, would like to see the high dollar gadgets and cheating be left to the 8,90 racers. Give the rest another option.

SPEC-DRAGSTER NEEDS DIVERSE CARS
I'm not much of a writer so I'll jump right in. I bracket race a front engine dragster at Route 66. 2000 was my first season. I'm 37 years old.

First off, I think one of the things that makes drag racing so cool is the different cars. So I'm not sure carbon copy racing would make us that much more interesting. I do think that a spec dragster class would compliment the stars not the cars concept. I think racing should encourage creative thinking, not stifle it.

Don't get me wrong; I like the idea of heads up inexpensive racing. I just feel the fans would be more excited about a diverse field of cars racing for gold. I know personally that's what I like. I have so many people stop to take a look at my car just because it's different. Racers still have to entertain. I'm not sure this idea would grasp the imagination of the casual fan and make them want more. Those are my thoughts.

SIGN HIM UP
I like the idea of a spec dragster class. Especially if it runs in a heads up class format. I race at Milan Dragway in Michigan and the competition is fierce in the Pro ET class, the best in the country. One of our racers won the championship in Pomona this year. I would build one of these cars in a second if the class started. We could run the cars in S/Pro and maybe once a month have a heads up race. Keep pushing for this. If you need someone to spread the word with fliers and such in my area don't hesitate to look me up.

Thanks,

NOW WE'RE COOKIN'
I started reading Terry Cook (Broomfoot) back in the '60s when he wrote for Drag News. He and Bob Ramsey were my favorites and I never missed a column

It was always a dream of mine to be involved in drag racing and when Terry was editor of Car Craft he interviewed me for a position on the staff, but alas the spot went to Ro McGonegal. (Good choice.) So I stayed in Ohio and remained a serious drag fan. I was sorry to see Cook "leave the sport," but now it's great to see him back and I look forward to his writing for your mag.
