TRACTION CONTROL 3
Racers being racers, the advent of traction
control, especially in the fuel classes, would
see elapsed times go down and speeds go up.
This will lead to more restrictions in other
areas that are enforceable. This will have to
be done to keep the insurance companies happy.
But as a safety issue it may well be worthwhile.

OF COURSE traction control should be made legal.
Any fan can see that. We go for the racing on
the track, not the extended burnouts and shut-offs
that have become prevalent in the fuel classes
and the aborted runs in the Pro Stocks.
We skipped Gainesville this year for this reason.
We live in Lakeland, about 120 miles south.
Usually go every year for at least 3 days. The
weather was too warm and the track

has a 330' concrete pad. Why would we bother?
Will we see near-record times? No way. Wasn't
the track record set in '99 by Mike Dunn? You'd
think that somebody would have figured out how
to run 4.4s there in 4 years. Guess not...
Traction control will actually help the competition
aspects of the sport, too. Just look at F1.
The nay-sayers said that only the top teams
(Ferrari) would be any good. Well, last time
I looked, there was a pretty good battle going
on there, even with the obvious superiority
of the Ferrari driver (Michael Schumacher).
Competition and quick times! That's what keeps
the fans coming back.
So, my vote is YES! Make traction control legal.
OR, NHRA could dig up and redo every marginal
track on the tour. How much is that going to
cost? A lot less than the supposed $7,500 per
vehicle for the device.
And while we're at it, why not have computer
control of some of the functions on the race
cars? This pneumatic/hydraulic stuff is so 19th
century! Get with it. Who cares where they get
the chips? A new marketing opportunity, if you
ask me.
Well, enough. Time to get to work. Thanks for
the soapbox.

TRACTION CONTROL 5
As a young but well educated (32 years old}
I think there are pros and cons. Would t.c.
have saved Brandon? Maybe. Then you look at
the performance of Greg Anderson. Some might
say he is using it [although I doubt it]. I
say if it is for the better of the sport do
it. I mean when will they get rid of carbs and
go to EFI? I thought this sport was about progression.
Although there is something about a hood scoop
that makes me smile. The bottom line is there
is time for a change. Burnt rubber and Nitro
forever.
