Urban Hillbilly’s Carnage Fest

Review by Ian Tocher

If you’re looking for that last-minute Christmas gift or just something to satisfy your own inevitable mid-January drag racing jones, look no further than Carnage Fest, Vol. I, a nearly two-hour thrill show featuring door-car crashes, nitrous explosions, fires and wheelstands shot nationwide over the last few years by Urban Hillbilly’s crack team of trackside videographers.

Head hillbilly Sean Melton bills the high-end compilation as “The Good Times Gone Bad of Door Cars,” but there are actually a couple of Funny Cars and even a dragster or two that show up in the mix. All-star announcer and DRO contributor Bret Kepner provides the narration and conducts several interviews on the DVD, including conversations with Jim Wiens and Scott Palmer about some of their “incidents” behind the wheel.

Some of the accidents captured on Carnage Fest are truly scary and you’ll find yourself wondering how anyone could survive such devastating impacts. Other incidents are quite comical (though not for the guys who just pranged their pride and joy, I’m sure), but fortunately, all drivers shown (and

incredibly, most of the cars) went on to race another day.

If you’re looking for race coverage, forget it. In fact, beyond recognizing the facility, sometimes you can’t even tell where an incident took place. But let’s face it, as long as the driver emerges okay, race fans love to watch crashes and fires no matter where they happen, and Carnage Fest delivers ample amounts of both.

In addition to Carnage Fest, Vol. 1, Urban Hillbilly offers several other drag racing DVDs dating back to 2001, all for $20 each (plus 5 bucks for shipping). The company’s Web site (www.urbanhillbilly.com) also features several photo galleries and video samples to give a taste of the action before buying.
