OLD BUSINESS
Did I say a "lightweight" quiz last time? Well, I thought so, but evidently
my lightweight is our quiz-takers "damn-near impossible." Our winner
was only able to get 4 of the 6 questions correct. Doesn't that give
hope to the rest of you? You don't have to be perfect to be first here!
Anyhoo, our congratulations and a lovely gift go out to our quiz winner
Greg Brubaker who knew some of the following:
1. How many NHRA Top Fuel national events did Don Prudhomme win?
a. 14
2. Orange County Int'l Raceway closed on October 29, 1983. Who won
the final OCIR Funny Car title?
b. John Lombardo
3. Who was the first California driver to win an NHRA Pro Stock national
event title?
c. Dick Landy
4. Who was the first California Top driver in the fours in NHRA competition?
a. Gary Ormsby
5. Don Garlits ran a 5.63 in October 1975 and this held until the 1981
NHRA Gatornationals as the sport's lowest e.t. Who ran a 5.62 to better
it?
b. Jeb Allen
6. According to all the print media available, the late great and ex-California
"Jungle Jim" Liberman's final opponent of the year beat him at the 1976
Orange County Manufacturers Funny Car show. This opponent was...
a. John Force
NOW ON THE NEW MIND-BENDER
As most are aware, NHRA is taking a leap into the deep end of the pool
when they go with their night only 50th Anniversary race at Pomona Raceway.
Pomona is the oldest stop on the NHRA national-event trail, topping
even Indianapolis Raceway Park, which didn't run the Nationals until
Labor Day Weekend of 1961. The Winternationals was run February of that
season. In honor of this ... I guess you'd call it "achievement" given
the frayed nerves and war mentality of the LaVerne inhabitants ... we
offer this humble all-Pomona quiz for July.
