THE LOADED QUESTION-er

Moon, Croon, June, and Spoon

What's that mean? Well, all of it's personal. "Moon?" My old grade and high school pal Howard Sheets and I used to moon people in fast food joints and we usually got our ya-yas out in the month of June. "Croon?" I like to sing. "Spoon," I crave my fun by the lovin' SPOONful. And "June?" The NHRA Springnationals. (Now if that isn't a stretch, I don't know what is) I don't care what corporate kowtowing the Glendorans have done. The Pontiac Excitement Nationals? Get outa my life. The June race in Columbus is and will always be the Springnationals to me. Here's five questions dealing with this twisted fact.

1. Who was the first Top Fuel winner at the Columbus Springnationals?

A. Don Garlits
B. John Wiebe
C. Bennie Osborn
D. Chip Woodall

2. Which one of the following pro racers scored his first career pro win at the Springnationals?

A. Doug Kalitta
B. Tony Schumacher
C. Warren Johnson
D. Maynard Rupp

3. The first Pro Stock winner at any Springnationals event was

A. Bill Jenkins
B. Mike Fons
C. Arlen Vanke
D. Ronnie Sox

4. Which of the following drivers has never won Columbus?

A. Doug Kalitta
B. Larry Dixon
C. Frank Pedregon
D. Doug Herbert

5. Who ran the first four-second run at National Trail Raceway?

A. Cory McClenathan
B. Gary Ormsby
C. Joe Amato
D. Gene Snow

6. The wettest Springnationals was 1981 when it was rained out on its first weekend. They ran it off a week later, but were plagued with rain throughout, finally concluding the show around Monday at 1 a.m. What was the second wettest weekend at this venerable tumbledown old track?

A. 1986 - when the top-floor, tower suite restrooms overflowed
B. 1985 - because of the gagging, render-me-unconscious humidity
C. 1996 - another two-weekend affair due to rain
D. 2001 - the Angelle Savoie winners circle
E. all of the above
