THE LOAD-ed QUESTIONER

You know where I was on the Fourth of July. It’s only been said seventy-eleven times in this month’s book --- eighth-mile Top Fuel racing at George Howard’s Huntsville Dragway. And in honor of this spirit-lifting and mind-changing experience we’re going to try and contain the queries to the eighth-mile. Not an easy task that, simply because when Winston jumped on the NHRA and IHRA bandwagons, match-racing died and everything of significance was conducted on the quarter-mile. Roughly that’s 31 years of static. But what the hell, try your luck. I know that’s what I’ll be doing writing this pig.

1.) NHRA has never hosted an eighth-mile national event, but IHRA did. It was held in 1974 and called the Southern Nationals. What was the town name associated with the site, you know like Englishtown, Seattle, Pomona, etc., etc.?
A.) Charlotte
B.) Louisville (Ohio Valley Raceway)
C.) Assumption (Motion Raceway in Ill.)
D.) Nashville (Music City Internat’l Raceway)
2.) And while on the subject of the 1974 IHRA race, who won Funny Car?
A.) Kenny Safford (Mr. Norm’s Charger)
B.) Shirl Greer

C.) Bill Leavitt’s “Quickie Too”
D.) Russell Long (“Chi-Town Hustler”)

3.) The last time NHRA posted eighth-mile fuel records was 1978 or ’79 (I believe) , the team that held the Funny Car ET record was
A.) Radici & Wise
B.) Raymond Beadle’s “Blue Max”

C.) Candies & Hughes
D.) Al Segrini’s “Black Magic”

4.) And on the subject of fuel eighth-mile records, who held the NHRA eighth-mile Top Fuel elapsed time record at the same time as the above question?
A.) Don Garlits
B.) Ted Wulf in Jim & Alison Lee’s dragster

C.) Hank Endres in the Endres-Clark-Brown “Nirvana” dragster
D.) Dale Funk in the English-Frakes-Funk “Kentucky Moonshiner”

5.) It had to happen on an eighth-mile, but who is the only racer to ever register a one-second elapsed time?
A.) Sam Miller
B.) Dave Anderson

C.) Russell Mendes
D.) Ramon Alvarez
