The Fuel Altereds were never ignored; nothing that volatile could be
stuffed away under the couch. The difference between 1966 and 1967 was
that in the pages of Drag News and to a lesser degree National
DRAGSTER, the altereds got the whole across-the-page headline more
frequently. A year earlier, it was rare to have your attention drawn
to a story by utilizing a three-column photo of a Fuel Altered final.
Maybe a shot on one of the photo pages, and now and then a shot at the
bottom of the lead page was about as good as it got.
In 1967, you could see all kinds of evidence of the change. On June
24, "Wild Willie" Borsch won a June 24 Irwindale Fuel Altered show and
they got a headline and a picture of the runner-up, Leroy Chadderton
in the Riverside Auto Supply/Hawkins-Scull-Chadderton/"Magnificent 7"
roadster, which ran an 8.06/197.36. Drag News in their Aug. 11
issue ran a picture ad announcing a two out of three between Borsch
and Chadderton at Irwindale. In the Sept. 1st Drag News, page
4, a four-column head and picture announced that "Mondello & Matsubara
Wear Altered Crown" at Lions ... and these were just a few of the examples.
200-MPH RUN AT IRWINDALE
That season also was a banner year for Fuel Altered performance. On
April 1, Emery and the "Pure Hell" roadster ran a class best 8.15 while
beating the Top Gas dragster of Guasco & Fuller in a Fremont Competition
Eliminator final. Chadderton equalled it two weeks later with an 8.15
and then really stepped up with the class' first seven, a 7.95 on May
27 at Lions Dragstrip. On Sept. 23, Borsch ran the class's first 200-mph
run when he clocked a 7.91/200.44 at Irwindale Raceway.
Irwindale held one of the greatest Fuel Altered shows ever. On Oct.
14 the track held its second annual 32-car Top Fuel invitational Grand
Prix, which also featured eight of the best Fuel Altereds. Going into
this event, the best e.t. for AA/FA was Borsch's 7.91.
At the Grand Prix, Borsch qualified No. 1 with a stunning 7.79/200.00,
miles ahead of Dale Emery's 8.12/187.50 in the now Chrysler-powered
"Pure Hell" roadster for the No. 2 spot. In round one, Borsch ran the
class's best speed in a 7.85/203.60 win over Harrison and the "Beaver
Hunter." However, in round two, Emery and Borsch put on one of the most
historic races ever in Fuel Altered. Emery defeated Marcellus & Borsch
(Al "Mousie" Marcellus replaced Jim and Nick Harrell in May of 1967)
in round two in the class's first side-by-side seven-second second race
(7.65/197.36 to 7.94/200.00). The second side-by-side seven-second race
occurred in the final when Emery topped Joe Mondello and Sush Matsubara's
Fiat, 7.75/196.50 to 7.96/184.42.
