IS IT WORTH THE HASSLE?

I think one problem you have with contingency is the sanctioning body doesn't want to hassle with it. I tried to sponsor local events in several ways -- bench jobs, free gears, cash, sponsored the pay out, perfect run, etc. I found it very unappreciated. They didn't want to put the stickers on the car, and I found that they took them off after the race.

I learned that if you take care of your customers when they really need help that they will run your stickers on their car anyway.

Personally I think all of those stickers make the cars look terrible. I don't have any stickers on my tow truck not even the dealers. I have sent several of my friends to that dealer to buy a truck, though.

SOME ARE GOOD, SOME NOT SO GOOD

I wish I knew you were doing an article on contingency. After Byron, and a few races dad and I have done well at, I can add a few to your list.

At PRI, I spoke with Powermaster. The rep who handles the contingency program had gotten ill. Jennifer, whom I spoke with at the show, promises me that they hope to be caught up by January. They are very short handed down there and it was visible at PRI. They also said that they are not wanting to have anyone think they are not paying. Though that is what it looks like. I hope this is true.

CSI, Kim Woods handles the contingency stuff. They want proof of purchase, via warranty card on file. I don't know if that's posted anywhere or not, but last I knew, this was the case.

Mr Gasket, Summit, Strange, Comp, Crane, all have had me paid in 60-90 days, which I feel is acceptable. I am waiting for Manley and Holley. Holley is the worst. Class, win/RU and qualifying money. I'm waiting for it all! Probably close to $3000!!!!!

NEEDS CONTINGENCY POSTING EARLIER

I read your article and I think that you missed one very important part of the contingency program. When the season is over we are either building new cars, painting old ones, replacing decals, or any array of things involving our cars. Unfortunately, NHRA doesn't have any grasp as to when we are spending our money or doesn't care, and doesn't announce whom the contingency companies are until Dragster comes out after the first of the following year. By then it is too late to contact companies for decals, buy parts, and plan to be able to capitalize on the contingency program.

To solve this and improve it for all parties involved, NHRA should be required to post all of the contingency companies and policies prior to the last addition of Dragster. Additionally they need to take the ceiling off of how much the contingency can pay. Their holding it at $300 maximum is wrong. It has needed to be bumped up for years and let the free market prevail.
