"Love that thing," said Force. Perhaps it is symbolic of how far Force, raised in a trailer in Bell Gardens, has come in life. Perhaps it's nothing like that at all; it's only meaning is that Force has a tremendous sense of humor.

The tour finally works its way into Force's spacious office. Another place where collectibles end their journey. One of the most interesting is a poster Ford created out its print ad after Force surpassed Glidden's record. But in a strange twist, it's signed to John from Dan Davis, the man in charge of Ford's racing involvement. Not a bad endorsement of one's work.

Before all parties get settled, Walker Force has a few items of business for his younger brother. If you want to deal with John Force Racing, you must deal with Walker Force. He's the big brother everyone should have, the advisor everyone needs. If anyone knows how hard John Force has worked to get to this station in life, it's Walker. Once a sworn deputy who worked for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, and a player in security for the 1984 Olympics, Walker is protective of his brother's business empire. He's not one you'll find in the pits, but one you'll find outside corporate board rooms.

Among the items on Walker's list is a progress report on the book on Force. They're looking for an author for the John Force Story, a book that is destined to go straight to TV movie.

With coffee in place, his visitors ready, the door shut and the world outside, Force is ready to talk. The sportswriter, aware of the looming hair appointment, knows he'll ask one question and get a half-hour answer in the 15-20 minutes they have left. He was sent a page of questions but now must choose one.

"OK, what's your deal?" Force says.

"John, with 10 titles behind you, the record in hand, do you think 2001 will be the most important year in your career?" the writer asks.

"You want the truth? The truth," Force says, images of Jack Nicholson quickly fading away. It is now time to sit back and enjoy the ride.
