In 1986, DeName's Funny Car and wild social career was long behind him and his life was about to be. He had testified against a Mafia chieftain named Anthony Gaggi and the DeMeo crew members, testimony that guaranteed Gaggi a life in jail. This led to DeName's being put on the Government Witness Protection program and relocated to Emerald Valley, Texas near San Antonio.

Reportedly, NHRA/Diamond P mikester Dave McClelland ran into DeName in late 1985 at a Houston, Texas car lot. The conversation went something like this.

"Hey, Dave, remember me?

McClelland's friendly baritone confessed, "My friend I meet an awful lot of people and I'm sorry but I've forgotten."

"Well, I used to race a Funny Car out of Brooklyn, New York and .."

"FREDDY?!"

"Yeah"

"What are you doing in Texas, my man?"

"Well, I come down here to get away, you know, a change of scenery. I made some guys real mad up in New York."

In late January of 1986, DeName was at his Emerald Valley home. He took down a macrame rope that hung plants in his room, and then hung it from the ceiling. He had been lying down on a large waterbed and put the now noosed rope around his neck. He then bent his knees up behind his back, letting his body sag, tensing the rope. Then using the rippling waterbed for spring, he pushed off and successfully committed suicide.

Due to his awkward exit, there were rumors that DeName had been found by associates of the betrayed mobsters, but whatever the true reason, the consensus was that the world had been freed of a vicious thug - colorful personality and Funny Car career not withstanding
