Very likely, the most popular fuel motorcycle action is housed in IHRA's Nitro Harley class. IHRA instituted the class in 1998, which features a qualified eight-bike field, all of them sporting the trademark Harley-Davidson wings.

Current IHRA president Bill Bader and Harley enthusiast John Russell used to run all-Harley shows at Norwalk Raceway Park in Ohio, and enjoyed much success. In 1997, Bader and Russell invited some fuel Harleys to run an exhibition eliminator at the IHRA World Nationals and the race went over big time. Then, Bader, Eldon Alderman, Ray Price, John Mancuso, and Harley-Davidson's Pete Amenda got together and thought that an IHRA Nitro Harley class would be a viable option and that class came to life in 1998.

The first champion was Mancuso in 1998, followed by Jay Turner in 1999 with the current IHRA records now standing at a superb 6.443 by Turner and a 216.76 by Jim McClure.

Finally, in the middle 1990s, NHRA, the big exposure organization, decided to call on the services of the Top Fuel motorcycles again. At the 1995 U.S. Nationals ran two pair of them and have done so to the present.

The fans love them, and even fuel car racers have a history of being fuel bike fans. This writer recalls that when O'Brochta made his 7.08 pass at Ontario Motor Speedway, Don Prudhomme, Raymond Beadle and a few other top name fuel drivers were at the fences to watch this shot.

The Top Fuel motorcycle is scary, certainly dangerous, and not for everyone (as a participant), but as long as there is 320-mph drag racing, there will always be a place for these two-wheeled rockets.
