Super Stock's own Bill Jenkins wheeled the "Doc Burgess" Plymouth Arrow to the Cars 3,200-pound title, and Faubel (Unlimited), Jim Thornton's Ramchargers Dodge (2,700-pound), Ronnie Sox (3,000), and Dick Housey's Plymouth in 3,400 pounds.

In addition to the magazines, the success of the Super Stock Nationals was not lost on the track owners. Tracks like Capitol Raceway in Maryland would soon host a "King of Kings" Invitational and their competitors would hammer on Super Stock's doors to see if they could get in on a piece of the action. The Virginia magazine did decide to share the wealth and the 1966 version of the event would be held at the brand new New York National Speedway in Center Moriches, L.I., New York

Unlike the York experiment, the second Super Stock race would much more resemble an NHRA or AHRA extravaganza than a spontaneous drag racing "Woodstock." The dates were set for Aug. 5-7, 1966 and would involve class competition for A/Stock through C/Stock and A/Stock Automatic through C/Stock Automatic, plus three days of individual class competition in wide-open classes like Unlimited, 2,000-, 2,400, 2,700-pound nitro, and 2,700- and 3,000-pound gas. On Sunday, the whole shebang would come to an end with a big Mr. Super Eliminator runoff, featuring all class winners and runner-ups.

(NEXT PART: A few more successes and the Super Stock meet becomes just another match race.)
