HAHN & ODDY SET
PRO MOD RECORD
by Jeff Burk
The 2000 IHRA Pro Mod championship team of owner/tuner Jim Oddy and
driver Fred Hahn had been having problems all season trying to sort
out a new engine combination and a new chassis. They have been working
overtime to get ready for the Pro Mod exhibition race at Indianapolis,
where in 1972 Oddy drove an Opel BB/GS to the Competition Eliminator
championship.
After a bar was added to the driver's cage mandated by NHRA (also added
to Al Billes' car), the team hit the track and ran 6.23 at over 228
mph, which is the fastest legal Pro Mod speed ever. They lead qualifying
by 13-hundredths. NHRA officials immediately teched the car after the
run, checking blower pulleys and other engine and drivetrain components
to verify its compliance. It passed.
MORGAN CAMPAIGNING
IN 2 CLASSES
By Susan Wade
Just as Tim Gibson competed in both Top Fuel and Nostalgia Top Fuel
at the 50th Anniversary NHRA Nationals in July at Pomona, Pro Stock
driver Larry Morgan is doing double duty this weekend at Indianapolis.
He'll try to make the Pro Stock lineup for the 10th time this season
in his Dodge Neon R/T while running a Hemi-powered Dodge R/T in the
Comp Eliminator class.
"It's a big weekend, so I figured I'd make use of it," the Norwalk,
Ohio, driver said. Although he said his main purpose is acquiring more
data about the Hemi engine ("I'm basically running the Dodge R/T Pro
Stock car that I ran prior to taking delivery of my new Neon"), Morgan
added that winning both races would be the ultimate gift to Mopar and
Dodge. He has eight career Pro Stock victories. His last Comp Eliminator
win was at the 1986 NHRA Finals at Pomona.
