This is the story of two survivors of the ’60s and their cruise down a memory lane of sorts. It was, if you will, a futile attempt by a pair of drag racing’s gonzo journalists to revisit their personal history and youth by traveling down a long dead highway and at the same time to discover what — if any — interest the old highway might have for hot rodders.

The peripatetic pair began their journey at the only In-n-Out burger stand on old Route 66 in LaVerne, California and ended up in St. Louis, Missouri. What they found was that Route 66 was part dead corpse, chorus girl, and time warp with equal amounts of bad food, bad roads, and bad cops mixed in.

Look, there’s a sign post up ahead; it says you are on Historic Route 66 — beware of the leather wing bats.
