For a serious bracket racer these accomplishments have to be a little amazing. As they will tell you, not spinning the tires is the key to consistent elapsed times and going a whole season on one set of tires is a double bonus. Is Whittaker’s massive Monte a bracket car? Of course it is.

While it is called a “crate motor” the engine is definitely a high-performance piece. The block is GM with a four-inch Cola crank with GRP rods and Ross pistons attached. Bore size is 4.500 inch. The Edelbrock aluminum intake and Holley HP 850 carb delivers fuel to the cylinders. Comp Cams provides all of the components of the valvetrain. An MSD 7AL3 ignition system provides the spark and ignition control. The headers are Supercomp by Hooker and are 2 1/8 inch in diameter. According to Whittaker, they weren’t designed to go into a ‘72 Monte Carlo but he and Billy Glidden got them to fit after a six-hour thrash. They dump into four-inch tubes that connect to a pair of Flowmaster mufflers.

Whittaker doesn’t have to worry about buying tires at the track. He buys these BFG P275x60R15 tires at his local Wal-Mart for $141.00 each

The interior of the Monte is as stock as the day Alan bought it off of the used car lot in his hometown of Whiteland, Indiana. Only the roll cage and MSD give any hint that it is a race car.
