THE LOADED QUESTION - er

As the great comic John Cleese would say, "And now for something completely different." Except for Bret Kepner and maybe a half-dozen other sharpies, these quizzes seem to be beyond the scope of the audience. It's not like we're asking what Larry Petit's shoe size was or something like that. In the last quiz, we had Kepner get them all right. That was to be expected, but we didn't expect that the next best finish was a seven-way tie with three correct answers in 10. I mean one guy had Bob Glidden as the winner of the 1976 AHRA Gateway Nationals. Now I know how the Jim Romes of the world come to be created.

Okay, something different. Large Motorsport Editor and I have put our heads together and found one common detrimental denominator in all the quizzes that didn't get answered: They had too many words. So how about some pictures to go with those words.

We're gonna call this quiz, "Get the Picture." Each photo will have a description and question below it; you answer it. Example; Larry Dixon Jr. is paired alongside of Gary Scelzi in this year's Memphis Top Fuel final. We say "Scelzi won as most know, but what stood out about this race?" You answer, "Dixon stacked the car," the orchestra is cued, there's a crash of symbols, the band plays, and two lovely hostesses spirit you off stage to a hot tub and a bottle of SilverThunder malt.

Others will be simple identification, like "Who's this guy?" Like taking birdseed from a cuckoo clock? Sure, it is. Now don't let us down. Get out there and play ball.

Get the Picture

Who is the guy racing Jake Johnston in Joe Pisano's Vega at Irwindale?
The year is 1974. The guy is a former standout Top Fuel driver as well, and is currently, the owner and tuner of a top-rated nitro car. (Randy Dacus photo)

Uh oh. Former Funny Car World Champion had a very bad night at the 1975 NHRA Summernationals in Englishtown, N.J. Any guesses as to who he is and what the name of the car was? (Norm Blake photo)

Ed McCulloch is seen sporting a brand new Dodge Demon body at this Firebird (Idaho) match race in 1974. A popping blower roughed up older "Revellution" shell a few days earlier. Anyway, the question's not about McCulloch, it's the other guy. Who is he, what's the name of the car? Hint: He's a former World Champ. (Rich Carlson photo)

It's Gas Ronda's 1970 Mustang, but not Gas driving at this Orange County match race. Someone else goosed the moose at this and several other West Coast soirees. Who is he and why is he? (Tom West photo)

A photograph of Shirl Greer's "Chained Lightning" Mustang. What's wrong with this picture? (Barbara Reyes photo)
