August is upon us, so let's have an "august" quiz. According to our
Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary, "august" means stately, imposing,
of majestic grandeur. So in that spirit, let's have a regal test for
our racing brainiacs. This will not come with the answer like our last
two, but will be constructed in a fashion to approximate every high
school kid's nightmare, differential calculus…or make that fill-in-the-blanks.
The hint here is that all the answers are august and regal and have
majesty.
For example, if I put ____ & Marshall Top Fuel Funny Car team, you
would answer "King," and you'd be right. What could be easier?
The winner for this edition of "the LQ" gets to try a Little King malt
liquor eight-pack and see if he can dethrone the wee one.
AND THE CORRECT ANSWERS TO THE "MATCH the WINNER" QUIZ IS … our old
pal, St. Louisan, St. Lousian, St. Louis-ite, aw to hell with it, new
neighbor, our old pal, Bret Kepner.
And for other interested parties, here are the answers:
Terry Capp (1974 AHRA Challenge)* Carl Olson (1972 NHRA Winternationals)
Rick Ramsey (1970 NHRA Supernationals) Dale Funk (1975 NHRA Gatornationals)
James Warren (1976 NHRA Gatornationals) John Wiebe (1973 NHRA Springnationals)
Mike Snively (1967 Mr. Eliminator USA) Dennis Baca (1977 NHRA U.S. Nationals)
Kenny Bernstein (1991 IHRA Winter Nationals) Doug Herbert (1993 NHRA
Springnationals)
* - I know, I know. What about Garlits winning at New York National
Speedway in '74? That race was the PRO Challenge and did not have the
involvement of AHRA. Counting on the Tulsa address, AHRA held its own
"Challenge" event that year and Capp beat John Wiebe in the final of
that race to get the above credit.
