A lot of drag racing's most famous stars can
claim time in that spot. San Fernando Valley-ites
such as Don Prudhomme, Tommy Ivo, Kenny Safford,
John "Tarzan" Austin, and Bob Muravez are just
a few of the guys that put in time with the
"Big Boy."
I
had never gone to one of these cruises, mainly
because I like my memories just as they are.
It's like an old girlfriend who is inquiring
about you, and you get cold feet. To my mind,
I want to remember her as she looked in her
prime, and I also want to keep up that fantasy.
And the same goes for me in regards to her view.
I'm 56. I'm not as beautiful as I was when I
was 18.
But
enough. Jeff Burk, Darr Hawthorne and I decided
to take in the Friday Night Cruise at Bob's
and, all in all, I'm reasonably glad I went.
Most of the classy rods and roadsters are owned
by people my age, and as Jeff so eloquently
put it, "it looks like a lot of crawling back
into the womb to me." We all agreed that it's
a worthwhile stop if you're a cruiser. On this
particular night in late January, they probably
had anywhere from 50 to 75 quality cars in the
lot. It was good entertainment for an hour or
two.
We're going to condense this to about the time
it takes to read this article. By the way, this
cruise is going to go on for a long time. This
Bob's, built in 1949, has been made into a state
landmark, so the potential wrecking ball apparently
has been packed away.
Check it out.
