One of the most famous of all of
Don Prudhomme's Funny Car rides was the U. S. Army car. It
had one of the greatest seasons in the history of drag racing
back in 1975 and 1976.
One of the most unusual cars
that Prudhomme ever drove was the Hot Wheels wedge.
It was a great looking ride but reportedly the rear
of the car tended to get airborne in the lights and
it was a real handful to drive. |
Prudhomme actually won his first
Top Fuel race in 1962 at the wheel of the fabled Greer-Black-Prudhomme
Top Fueler at a race at Pomona Fairgrounds, beating Lefty
Mudersbach driving for Chet Herbert in the final. Prudhomme
won nine more races that year including races at Bakersfield,
Lions and San Gabriel in California, and was runner-up to
Vance Hunt and the Texas Whips at the AHRA Nationals at Green
Valley, Texas. Most of the hitters in Top Fuel racing were
at those events. He drove to eight more SoCal wins in 1963
and, according to noted drag racing historian Chris Martin,
added at least a half-dozen more SoCal wins in 1964.
Another of the line of the Snakes Hot Wheels Top Fuelers.
So, let's add about 23 more Top Fuel titles to Prudhomme's
NHRA total as a driver of 14 and that brings his total number
of "national event"
caliber wins just as a driver to 71.Prudhomme won 35 NHRA
titles as a driver but you can add a bunch more to that.
He also won four AHRA World Championships; 1974, 1980, 1981,
and 1982. Chris Martin's records show that the Snake won
two AHRA National Events in 1973. In 1974, Prudhomme won
the AHRA World Championship including six national event
wins. That year he also won the PDA race, the Pop Hot Rod
Event and the Super Stock Nationals -- and those races had
many of the best cars in the nation competing. We also found
in doing research that he won two AHRA events in 1973,two
more in 1978 and 81 and four more in 82. He then went on
to win back to back AHRA Championships. He won six races
total in 1983-84 in AHRA/ADRA, which brings Prudhomme's win
count is up to 98.
[Ed Note: I'm sure we will hear from AHRA expert Phil Elliot
who will be able to set us straight on these numbers.]
