On
a visit to "Drag Digest" in
1966 Suzy suggested to the
newspaper owner what was lacking
in drag racing was a social
column dedicated to the people
behind the sport. "Suzy's
Scrapbook" was the result
of that conversation and Suzy
has been dedicated to "bringing
the human side of racing to
the forefront" ever since.
In
1968 she moved her "Suzy's
Scrapbook" gossip column to
"Drag News" and was with that
publication for several years
before going to work for "National
Dragster." While at Dragster
she wrote "The Social Side"
of drag racing and several
human interest stories for
editor Michael Dougherty.
In
the '70s Suzy wrote a series
of articles for National Dragster,
"Women In Drag Racing," which
featured the private lives
of the women who were the
backbone of the sport; drivers,
wives, sisters and the mothers.
Along the way Suzy has written
for "Drag World," "Drag Times,"
and wrote several feature
stories for various programs
and magazines.
In
the early 1980s Suzy was the
publisher of the "Sand Paper"
which was the official newspaper
for the National Sand Racing
Association. Her responsibilities
ranged from taking the photos,
writing the stories, laying
out and pasting up the newspapers
to selling and designing the
ads.
"As
long as you don't take it
too seriously, gossip can
be a lot of fun. But you'd
better watch out," she states,
"it can also be addictive."

"Broadway" Bob Metzler,
owner-operator and all-around promoter for Great
Lakes Dragway in Union Grove, Wisconsin, is
shown with Top Alcohol pilot "Hollywood" Richie
Amato (no relation to Joe). Richie and Bob were
hangin' out with the Greek in Joliet, Illinois
promoting Bob's upcoming birthday bash to be
held in September of this year. "We're having
entertainment, lots of good food and I'm inviting
all my friends from all over the country to
attend." If Bob's enthusiasm is any indication,
it should be a barn-burner.
If John "Brodie" Smith expects fans to believe his "I went up in smoke" description of the second-round loss to wife Rhonda then he'd better check out the ESPN video first. Sorry John, no one believes you lost traction while racing your wife, it appears that you let her win. I wonder what women who struggled to make a name for themselves the hard way would say to that . . . John Force wasn't the only large contributor at the recent D.R.A.W. Auction where they had to bring portable heaters into the tents to keep everyone warm. Troy Coughlin also doled out a hefty $500.00 for the bobby-head doll of NHRA
Bob Frey. Other notables that were in attendance were Tony Shumacher, Cory McClenathan, Jerry Glynn (who got in a bidding war with John Force for the quilt) and Doug Herbert . . . We are happy to announce the upcoming wedding of Chris Carlton (the late Leroy Goldstein's wife) to Las Vegas banker George Otto. The happy couple are planning to wed in the penthouse suite at the Bellagio Hotel, and this from a girl who swore up and down she'd never get married again.
Congratulations are in
order for Pattie Miles, public relations honcho
to Greg Anderson and Mark Whisnant, seen here
on the left chatting with Susan Arnold, Kenny
Bernstein's press representative in the Joliet,
Illinois tower. The ladies were discussing Patti's
upcoming wedding to NASCAR crew chief Kevin
Hamlin to be held in the Northern California
wine country. Kevin was Dale Earnhardt's last
crew chief and is now working for Robby Gordon.
As Susan put it so descriptively, happy life
to Pattie and Kevin on their
"Big Ass Wedding."
