This is the switch panel after I wired it. Take your time and do it right the first time. I was sitting in the shop watching a NASCAR race and it took me about two hours to get completely ready. I used two 12-voltage sources (the heavy red wires) to keep voltage more even across the panel and then a different color wire for each circuit the switch controls.

I have wired the last few cars with a master disconnect that is within reach of the driver. The reason is simple. If there is a problem with the car or wiring, the driver can instantly shut down everything right away without jumping out of the car to shut it off at the rear of the car. You are still required to have a method to shut off the master switch on the rear of the car. I will use a rod and a cable on the Back-2-Basics car that you will see in the next issue.

The actual wiring of the car will start with the next issue and it is not a complex issue. Just think about what you need and the easiest way to accomplish it. The "wiring panel" I made up is a little large but I may have to add a delay box (heaven forbid) someday and I wanted some room for it.

The "Back-2-Basics" Vega in "basic-ally white."

The last little HOO-RAH for this article is that I just got home from a race in St. Louis to find out Andy (one of my boys) and his friend, Chris Coffman, had painted the "Back-2-Basics" Vega while we were gone. They used the facilities at Coffman's Body Shop in Cedar Falls, IA to give the car its "Basic White" paint job. It turned out very nice and I want to thank those guys. Now we can really get going as we can finally do some final assembly.

O.K. Jeff, let's get that 383" Ohio Crankshaft-Dart-Isky-Moroso-MSD-Demon equipped (that's NASCAR talk) small block Chevy together. (Got to put some pressure on our Editor...it's my job!)

Next month I will show you where we are on the budget. So far we are doing great. If there are no major surprises we should come in under the $12,500.00 budget and have a really reliable and fun race car on the strip by the end of May, I HOPE!!

Thanks to the many companies who have signed up to support the "Back-2- Basics" project car. Auto Meter - MSD - Demon - Moroso - J-W Performance Transmissions - Hoosier - Aeromotive - F.A.S.T. - and several companies we will announce when the engine article is posted.
