Neatness Does Count
Three things in this photo are "racer friendly." One, the mini toolbox
can hold small tools, fuses, earplugs, hamburger money for oil-downs,
etc. Just bolt it through the floor and you have secure way to carry
"stuff" in the car.
The Master Disconnect you see right above the tool box can easily be
reached by the driver and is a good safety item. At the first sign of
a problem the driver can shut down the power. This is MUCH FASTER than
having to jump out of the car and flip the switch on the rear bumper,
especially if you smell that dreaded electrical wiring smoke during
a run. This Master Disconnect is operated by a PTO cable mounted in
the rear tail light. Cost of the cable (since you must have the switch
I have left that cost out) and hardware was $22.50.
The third thing is the pressure gauges on the CO-2 bottle. Keep them
where you can see them - one less thing to worry about as you will "know"
if the CO-2 is operational.
Alternative
Alternator
Most of you have seen this deal before. With the demand for proper voltage
in the race car a bigger concern all the time, the use of alternators
has returned. In this case the motor plate, remote water pump, and belt
drive fuel pump used up all the room towards the engine. The alternators
will work just fine if mounted in reverse position as in this photo.
In this case, a small bracket off the frame rail and a tube with heim
ends for adjusting the belt was all that was needed. The one-wire alternator
from East Coast was about $150 and the brackets cost about $6.00 to
make.
Now, in late rounds the battery won't be a concern anymore. Just concentrate
on winning!
The Lines are Your Friends
Have you ever crossed the finish line and you were "sure" you got there
first but the win-light came on in the other lane? Most of us have.
I have used something for the past five years or so that I trust at
the finish line. I get mine positioned by lining the other car up when
we are pre-staged. That is about as close to a "tie" as we can get.
I use the green line as my "margin" I want to lead through by and the
red line tells me I am "not there" so I might as well "dump them."
Works for me and for 25-cents of tape or some shoe polish it might
help you in the next close race.
