This view of the BG Belt Pump shows the housing
that holds the gears and wear plates. By simply swapping out the
gears and wear plates, the same pump can be changed to have three
different volumes. The flat mounting bracket makes it easy to mount
on just about any engine in any location. |
Due to the increased volume of fuel the engine will require, the entire
fuel system needs to be set for maximum flow. I already had a 10 outlet
fitting on the fuel cell and we opted for the BG inline fuel filter
with a stainless steel element. The filter must be alcohol compatible,
so if you are changing over to alcohol, make sure your filter is up
to the task.
The next consideration is the design of the fittings. I recommend the
BG fittings that have a radius blended into them. This eliminates any
restriction in flow between fittings or out of the fuel tank. The next
item you are REQUIRED to have with a belt drive fuel system is a cable-operated
safety bypass valve. There are a couple reasons why the bypass valve
is a good idea (besides it is required!). One, if for some reason your
engine wonąt shut off due to wiring problems or whatever you can simply
pull the fuel shut-off cable and the fuel from the pump will be by-passed
back to the fuel tank and the carburetor runs out of fuel shutting the
engine off. Second, if you like to tow your car with the fuel bowls
empty or you are going to remove the carburetor, you can pull the fuel
shut-off and let the engine idle until the carburetor runs out of fuel.
The instructions from Barry Grant Fuel Systems are complete and easy
to understand. Pay attention to recommended fuel line size and try to
eliminate any 90-degree fittings as they just create flow restrictions.
The best location for the fuel pressure bypass regulator is as close
to the carburetor as possible.
As you can see in the photos the next project is designing a mounting
bracket to mount the fuel pump on the Indy 540 Mopar. There isnąt much
space to work with but the thin profile of the BG Fuel Systems pump
makes it a lot easier to mount than most pumps. BG Fuel Systems offers
mounting kits for small block and big block Chevrolets. When we are
done they will offer a mounting kit for big block Mopars, as we will
turn our design in to their engineering department. The drive spindle
has a lot of adjustment for the pulley, as does the fuel pump drive
shaft. The slotted pulleys and slotted shafts use a .125" keyway
for reliability. This makes alignment of the pulleys a lot easier.

See what I mean by "limited space?"
When I remove the BG-400 electric pump there will be enough space
to mount the belt pump and bypass on a very simple bracket. I will
also have to find room for the inline fuel filter and get it mounted. |
The next Project 4-Link installment will show the mounting bracket
being made and actual installation of the pump, lines and filter. We
will also be looking at the new Moroso billet-rail aluminum drag race
pan and the protection provided by the Moroso Oil Accumulator.
