Mike:

The turbo 350 street/strip TCI transmission I purchased new will not go in high gear at wide open throttle, manual shifting. I have tried replacing the governor out of stock 350 at TCI request. No help. Even auto shifting it will not go into high gear without letting off gas. The transmission is in a stock '78 El Camino with a 305 engine.

Any advice would be a great help.

Thanks,

McConnell,

Very interesting problem! A few things you need to check:

  1. The first thing that comes to mind is low governor pressure. Check governor bore in case for excessive wear.
  2. Detent cable adjustment. First try unhooking the detent cable. If this cures the problem you will need to adjust the detent cable to barely get full pull at wide open throttle.
  3. Next, check mainline pressure. Put pressure gauge on mainline pressure tap and do a line pressure test on the transmission. Pressure should be only slightly higher than manufacturer's manual states. Your problem sounds like possibly some type of internal leak.
  4. Also, check the vacuum system. Make sure you have manifold vacuum at modulator and modulator valve is free in the case.
