Mike,

Over the years, I've heard of a mythical, optional "overdrive" tail section (or cone) for powerglides. Part of the myth was that GM had produced and tried these overdrive powerglides in the early 1960's. Is there any substance or truth to these stories? Is there such a thing available from aftermarket suppliers?

I haven't heard of an old overdrive powerglide from the factory. At my shop we set up powerglides and turbo 400 transmissions with Gear Vendor Overdrives. It is a self-contained 22-percent overdrive package.

QUESTION 2

Mike,

I have an '89 Mustang 306 with all the good parts. It has a C-4 with brake and 5500 stall. Is the stall too high? Should I put on an MSD 2-stage box and lower the launch?

Dear Another Mike,

Normally, we need to experiment a little on a two-step set up. With each set up, we want to start about 400-500 rpm lower than maximum torque converter stall. Sometimes, on a bad track, a lower chip could be a good choice to calm down the launch. On the other hand, say in the final round at the U.S. nationals, you might just pull the chip out and put it to the wall.
