Mike,
I was wondering if you could
help me with my TH400 Trans. I have trouble
with the clutches in 2nd gear burning after
about 50 passes. This is a pro brake, 5 clutch
1st gear, 6 clutch high pack, 3 clutch inter.
We put together all our own transmissions and
they seem to do the same thing. Are there tricks
that we don't know about that would help this
situation? Please help.
Thanks,

Ron,
Going on the limited information in your question
I can generalize an answer. Holding power in a clutch pack
or band is: A. Combination of a friction surface or B. Apply
pressure. So if you set up the intermediate clutch with
a 4 clutch pack that might get you more longevity. But you
will need to take a pressure reading off the transmission
also. Just to check that part of it.
Pressure needs depends on engine torque and
vehicle weight usually use 180-220 PSI. A transmission pressure
gauge kit can tell you this. The 1/8 pipe pressure tap is
located just behind the shift shaft on the drivers side
of the case. It will read in all the gears.
As far as your clutch pack your stock 3 pack
can be tuned up by installing a 4 pack this gives quite
a bit more surface area. Then the only thing you have to
worry about is how good your intermediate sprag is. But
that is another question all together.
Thanks,
Mike
