An important feature found on most aftermarket dampers is a degreed hub. In the case of the ATI model, the marks are in 1-degree increments and are etched 360-degrees around the circumference using a laser process. Widths of the dampers vary with each assembly. A typical 2-ring damper measures 1.2-inches wide, a 3-ring damper is 1.5-inches wide and external balance models are 1.8-inches wide.

IS THERE FREE HORSEPOWER LURKING?

An aftermarket damper not only solves the mandate of the sanctioning body rulebook, but it can also loosen up a fair amount of "free" horsepower. A reduction in torsional vibration increases engine power output. A functional damper removes the twist from the crankshaft and stabilizes camshaft and ignition timing. A reduction in twist at the end of the crank also stabilizes the valve train.

The bottom line is more power, and more reliability. Best of all, aftermarket dampers are available for almost every common drag race engine used in America. We'd have to call that "good vibes." We're sure you'll agree.
