Paul Smith returns with sons to Funny Car competition at Charlotte

Paul Smith won three races on the IHRA pro tour and was a fan favorite on the match race tour in “The Entertainer,” a car he bought from the late NHRA and NASCAR champion Raymond Beadle.

Working with sons John and Mike on the family Funny Car, Paul Smith returns this week to zMAX Dragway hoping once again to make life miserable for a few of the sport’s biggest names during the NGK Spark Plugs 4-Wide Nationals.

The elder Smith is a legend in the Southeast U.S. As a driver, he was runner-up for the NHRA Funny Car championship in 1974. As a team owner and tuner, he won races in Funny Car and Top Fuel and, as proprietor of Paul Smith’s Drag Racing School, he made available the equipment and hands-on instruction that jump-started the careers of dozens of young pro drivers.

John Smith will drive the team’s venerable ROCK Batteries-sponsored 2008 Chevy Monte Carlo while his dad and big brother will turn the wrenches. Although their national event appearances are limited, they rarely fail to qualify.

Bill Litton at the Vegas NHRA Nationals.

The Nitro Outlaw Drag Racing Association will hold its second event Saturday, April 28, at the Texas Motorplex in conjunction with the National Hot Rod Diesel Association.

Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars are scheduled to make three runs during the day. Top Fuel drivers Cory McClenathan, Bill Litton and Lex Joon will be competing with Funny Car drivers Del Worsham, Jack Wyatt and Todd Simpson in a Chicago-style format. The final round will pit the quickest Funny Car against the quickest dragster.

Fords flock to Maple Grove in May

The Keystone Automotive NMRA All-Ford Nationals returns to Reading, PA, for an action-packed weekend of racing May 4-6. There will be wall-to-wall Fords as the 18th Annual CJ Pony Parts NMRA Ford Motorsport Nationals presented by Vortech Superchargers ignites Maple Grove Raceway.

Even though this is the first weekend in May, this race marks the midway point on the 2018 season.

A special feature of the NMRA Ford Motorsports Nationals will be the Super Ford Showdown, featuring some of the best Ford bracket racers in the Northeast. Four big classes will be contested on both Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday afternoon the class winners face off in an all-out slugfest for the right to be crowned Super Ford Showdown champion. After the winner is proclaimed, he/she will be awarded the Super Ford Showdown champion’s trophy.
